I have thoroughly enjoyed creating this blog and carrying out all of the listed coursework tasks throughout the project, and i hope you enjoy reading it as much as i did.

One man wolf pack
Looks like I'm on my own now.
Harley has now left school to work full time at waitrose and to go onto Leicester college next year in search of a musical career (good luck H train), leaving me as the only member of this group remaining. Up until this point every post has been written in the grammatical context of a group, e.g. "we, us, our" etc. i would like to ask you to ignore this as it would take a very long time for me to trace back and change every single one of these posts. All future posts will be in this context and no longer written in plural.

Evaluation ideas
Harley and i have been discussing ideas for our evaluation and we would like to present it in an effective and interesting method. We have reviewed the things that we have used in the past to convey certain parts of the project so far, as well as devices we used last year at the AS level, e.g.
- Prezzie-interesting, yet repetitive and possibly ineffective for answering questions
- writing in essay form with a word processor - generally boring
- Video - defiantly a possibility, however the video itself is not the issue, more what we would do to make the video interesting and different
- slide share - PowerPoint's require interaction with the user, however it is very little and the answers will be conveyed in writing, which would make a boring PowerPoint
- animoto - again, very repetitive and is only interesting for the first 30 seconds, however if used correctly the outcome could be eye catching and interesting.
- Documentary - Harley was particularly swayed by a documentary for one a video featuring a song by nas. The video will be uploaded in a post by him. This seems to be one of the strongest options, as it is quite unique and interesting, and we can cut betweenparts of the video and parts of the interveiw, which will create a more interesting way to answer the evaluation questions

Back up plan
Me and Harley have been thinking about the fact that we have two days to get his whole thing done, and we are seriously struggling for time and loctions etc. So me and Harley have searched the school for back up locations if worse comes to worse. We found a small office looking room with a board which we could stick illuminati related posters. it looks like it could make an ok location, providing we can make it convincing enough so that it doesent look like it's in a school.

Major setbacks
our progress was crippled yesterday by god himself, who has decided the night before the day we film was the best time to make Harley ill. This left me with little to do yesterday, as there was no filming to do without Harley. He says he feels well enough to come into school today, and he is on the way to school right now so that we can get our filming underway in Jack's house, our main location. There is a lot of work to do in just two days, and I'm working for most of one of them. that means were going to be forced to film everything and edit it in just two days. Obviously I'm not blaming Haley for becoming ill, but this could be our downfall. as soon as Harley arrives i think we will be heading out to film straight away, the clock is ticking.

Progress
Even more changes to the story have now been made, this time even more dramatic ones. There is no longer a protagonist character, and the band will now take up the main lead as well as the performance shots. The agents focus is now on the band rather than a particular person e.g. jack. this is making things a lot easier, as well as possibly increasing our potential. We are retaining the file shot that Harley uploaded a still of onto the blog, and we are still following the agent who is keeping watch on the band. The files and projects that the Agent will be holding is still called project uprising, and the video is still going to be limited to indoor shots, including some over the shoulder shots of the agent on the computer. Today we filmed some of the inside shots, including our agent answering the phone, which will initiate the story of him watching over the bands activities. We also discussed tomorrows filming session, our editing needs and certain variables about the video such as the mise en scene of the computer monitor when he sits down, e.g. what should be on the screen when the agent sits down.

New storyboard is go
Me and Harley just visited Mr Smith who confirmed that the storyboard was dramatically improved and showed a lot more hope in creating a successful music video, with it's simpler shots and settings and it's more hopeful looking performance shots. Also he said that for an overnight project Harley was especially efficient with his work, which shown very promising potential. Following this Harley will soon upload a photo of the new storyboard to the blog, and that will in turn be followed by an animatic. i also intend to do a post on mise en scene, as this is one of the main problems with our plot based side of the video.

Total reboot
after deducting all of the information and feedback earlier today, Mr smith suggested, amongst other things, me and Harley should shoulder some of the more important stuff in the making of the video. the Video has been given a very low mark, due to lacking of shots and being drastically unclear. heeding Mr smiths advice me and Harley have began to put together what we think may turn the project around and show it in a new lite, however retaining the defining qualities of it's storyline.
Some of the main things were picking up on for our failure last time are lack of organisation (big time) as we were sometimes when filming saying for example "OK then we'll just film what we can here, get a variety of shots and then we'll pull something out of it afterwards", which is now clearly not good enough - our storyboard is there for a reason and we need to stick to it with total accuracy. Also, an animatic would be nice. Which brings me on to my next point: Some of us are taking to much responsibility; this is a team for a reason, and the tasks need to be shared out equally - taking as much responsibility as possible doesn't generate marks for yourself, it brings the entire group down because of lack of fulfilment. This isn't a dig at anyone, but we all need to stop making promises we cannot keep because it doesn't do us any favours, just makes us fall down in key areas.
Also, we need a decent amount of space and props, and we have to be certain that we are using the best available location for our filming before we go there to do it, as this has been the downfall of our band scene filming, and has therefore cost us a big chunk of marks. we now have a good idea of where we are filming this, however we have suffered because of poor organisation for our first draft. we all need to agree on an area which is sufficient and has the necessary qualities to fulfill the requirements of the scene we are shooting. Which leads me to the next point: Mise en scene needs to be immaculate, anything less isn't good enough. the scenes of the protagonist didn't have the right mise en scene, neither did the bedroom or the suburbs of braunstone. the best mise en scene in the video was probably the subway and the CCTV shot, as they both connote the right messages e.g. enclosed short spaces, cloudy and gloomy, being watched etc. the bedroom scene could have been massively successfull if our mise en scene was bang on, e.g. without any knowledge of what we were going for, viewers wouldn't have been able to tell that our protagonist was who he was and was looking for the truth, e.g. no projects or posters visible in the bedroom. This is one area i intend to focus on, to take the strain off of the group and because i think i have quite an eye for mise en scene and some good ideas which connote to the symbolism of our video.
We also need a better storyboard this time, as last time ours was to sketchy and slightly inaccurate. also, Mr smith warned us it was lacking in speed and shot variety, but we did not have time to change this, so we were filming on impulse rather than keeping to a decent set storyboard. Also, it would result in a bad animatic, if we had one. All of the things i have written about seem to be the main downfalls of this group, and we have already started to fix what we can by taking even amounts of responsibility, and me and Harley have began to take on the storyboard, and i intend to make a start on the animatic by the end of today hopefully.

Poster ideas
For our poster, it is likely to have some sort of Illuminati mention on it, so below I've shown some of the symbolism i think would go best with the poster, as well as my opinions on it:
This is the biggest Illuminati symbol out there, and is easily the most well known, after films such as angels and demons featured it. This is a powerful piece of symbolism, and should at least reach out to our target audience, as is our goal.
This symbol is less popular, as it is actually the freemasons symbol, who are often suspected to be in joining with the illuminati by beleivers, which obviously offends them. even though we could use this on the poster just for the sake of bigger fans, i dont think we should because if the audience is unaware of the conspiricies at the level we have studied them then it will make very little sense to them.
The darker areas of the graph are the places in the world where the most veiws are being made, clearly the USA. The all seeing eye, is pictured on the American dollar bill, which means it will still represent goverement to some of this audience. Therefore, the all seeing eye is the best symbol we could use.

MORE prop problems
Okay, just to bring up to speed, the police officer is no more. We have tried and tried to get hold of some uniform form many different sources, and it's becoming clear that we are not going to be able to impersonate a police officer, so that idea is gone. However, we are still intent on a chase scene involving the protagnist bumping into someone, probably another agent.

Post production
Aidan has now brought his laptop into school with Sony Vegas on it. we have not started to edit the footage into a music video, but Aidan is fitting effects to all of the clips ready for when we come to edit it into shape. so far Vegas is proving to be well worth it, showing much stronger capabilities than Imovie, and the effects of the software are much more effective in scenes such as the CCTV shot and various others. hopefully the software will allow us to really create the right feel for the video e.g. contrast changes etc. also when using Imovie slowing down and speeding up effects can be very sensitive, and hopefully Vegas will prove better than this, if anything needs doing. One scene in particular which i favour with it's added effects is the CCTV scene in which the agent, Harley, appears behind our protagonist. The way in which this is done, is by adding an effect to the original clip towards the end of it where the CCTV shot starts to blur (an effect which is used often). the same effect is then used on the take of Harley stood behind jack, where it starts to blur to show that he is there, then it goes back to the effect into the original clip without Harley. Vegas made this a lot easier to do than Imovie with it's effects. also we had to edit and upload the Vlogs, one of which is now on the blog. Vegas made this easier and more efficient than it would have been to use Imovie. Once this is all edited and handed for our first draft, we will be going over it to look at what needs doing over and improving, and then we start storyboarding the new shots for our improved product.

chase scene
looking for inspiration for our chase scene, I've come across the videos below. i chose these videos as last year i wanted to have a chase scene in my film opening, and it proved harder than i had thought. I think one of the biggest reasons for this, wasn't because of the lack of equipment or inexperienced filming, but rather because of lack of planning, which is why i will be looking closely at inspirational scenes. the videos below are much above what i believe we can achieve, but we can still make a more basic version by studying the way they are done:
here is the final story board for our chase which was developed by harley

locations shots for modified chase scene
okay, to sum up, we have now been told twice that we cannot use the police equipment outside of school and it's becoming clear that there is only one way were going to be able to do this, which is in school. Even though Aidan suggested that thereis no way we can film in school, me and harley took the liberty in our frees yesterday to try and figure out how we could maybe make it work, and to do so we need the least academic looking area of the school. we took a camera and photographed areas that had the potential to be apart of the scene:

prop problems!
For two separate scenes of our music video we needed some very specific costume and props, namely police riot gear. the gear which we need is mentioned in a previous post, with pictures. i went to a friend of mine who is in the police and said he would attempt to get me the equipment we needed or the closest to it that was available. he realised that all of the equipment he would take out would have the number on it registered to him when he took it out, and he wanted to check that we were okay to use the equipment for filming without breaking any of his job rules, so he spoke to the boss at professional standards department, and they told him that we would not be able to film this in a public place with professional equipment, especially if it was going onto the Internet, even for educational purposes. faced with this problem we all together cancelled the filming for Tuesday and started to think about how we were going to make shift a police uniform. Me and Harley tried to arrange make shifting a uniform out of common pieces of clothing, but we didn't think it would look good enough, and we wanted to meet a better standard. I told Mr Smith about the problem and possible hiring a costume from a costume hire shop, and he said he might be able to find a nightstick and a stab vest for us, which was a big relief. Earlier today Mr Smith told us he will get us the equipment asked for by tomorrow, which will be a big help. we intend to film the scenes from yesterday tomorrow in the same area as the subway scene. The scenes we need to film are: Jack running into the officer, the officer arresting/beating Jack, the officer beating another man (for the mind erase video).

Walking shots and potential argument scene
this is a shot from The Verve's bittersweet symphony promotional video. the protagonist is walking down the street bumping into people and vacantly ignoring them whilst they look in disgust.
in that scene, a woman follows and shouts to him, but he continues to walk and blatantly ignore her, not even looking to acknowledge her. this is an idea we could use for our video, since the protagonist knows something is so wrong but has had his memory erased, meaning he cannot identify the problem. the idea that he is so disturbed by a missing piece of information is what drives the protagonists characteristics, and he is so confused he refuses to acknowledge anything outside of his thoughts. the problem with a shot like this is that we are already on a tight schedule, and it would be harder to film in many respects. However, we are intent on having someone turn around and shout and make a fuss when the protagonist bumps into them, but they will just fade into the background rather than play a larger part like the woman in the clip.

general research
Like any conspiracy theory, Illuminati are highly speculated upon and the idea of a potential new world order is ridiculed by the vast majority. The website above is a timeline, listing all events to do with the Illuminati/ Freemasons. starting from the very bottom of the list, the organisation supposedly started in the 1700's, and is put on the web page as "Illuminati/Freemasons", the two have been supposedly linked in conspiracy theories for a long time. the name of the Illuminati is derived from bearers of the light, and supposedly the name also came from "Lucifer". the organisation was supposedly started by Adam Weishaupt and Jesuit Priest, along with the Freemasons.
Through the 1700 and 1800's the Freemasons and Illuminati spread their routes and adopted many other organisations such as the Rothschild's, aside from this there is very little activity or development up to the early 1900's where most events are relatively unimportant to our video. events such as the wall street crash of 1929 was supposedly caused by the Illuminati along with other worldwide economic depressions, showing how the Illuminati are linked to famous events taking place since their supposed creation.
The Illuminati are then blamed for financially backing Hitler for his invasion into Poland in 1939. At this stage the Illuminati are looking like a scapegoat for all bad things since the 1700's onwards. nothing of importance to our video then takes place until 1989 when George bush is elected president of the USA, and he is supposedly a free mason, who are still strongly associated with the Illuminati. before 1989, the Illuminati are Incorporated into many theories about assassinations of world leaders, such as only one man being arrested for the assassination of president Kennedy is found with 5 bullets from separate guns in his body. Also a prime example is the crash of flight KAL 007, the flight which Larry McDonald is on board. the plane supposedly flown over a shortcut which commonly used with low fueled planes, however the flight was high on fuel. it flown into restricted air space, at which point fighter pilots shot warning shots past the cockpit, which went un- acknowledged, so the flight was shot down. all bodies were recovered except for the pilot and co pilot. eye witnesses saw 2 parachutes from the plane. this is a fantastic example of how our video will be portraid as the Illuminati carrying top secret operations without any of the general public being aware.
In 1990, around the start of the gulf war, George bush publically announced the new world order. weather the context of this was twisted or not is constantly debated by believers and sceptics, even though he clearly says the words "new world order".
Illuminati symbols in everyday culture:
despite the Illuminati supposedly being extremely intelligent, there are claimed to be symbols left by them in almost any place you look. a good example to start with is the American dollar bill: the bill has the all seeing eye atop a pyramid, the Illuminati symbol. the dollar bill is also supposed to represent "the order of new ages", alarmingly close to Bushes publicly announced "new world order", obviously setting conspiracy theorists up with a link. also on the 20 dollar bill even more alarmingly and less likely to be a coincidence are pictures of the twin towers on fire, the pentagon on fire. at first this is rejected by almost everyone, but you don't have to look hard to see these pictures, and if the 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar bill are all folded in the seems to be like some sort of prediction or prophecy, since the notes were produced in 1996.
There are other references to the Illuminati in public culture, particularly the media and it's productions. below are just a few examples of Illuminati reference in Hollywood:
obviously the biggest question amongst this is, why would such a clever organisation give themselves away like this? that question does not seemed to have been addressed yet, but its almost certain that if they were responsible for the fall of the twin towers or such an event they would not openly admit or even hint that they were behind it. however, before starting this post i was very sceptical about the possibility of this secret organisation like Aiden, but i have now come to see that Harley did have a point when he mentioned the amount of evidence suggesting this and i firmly believe, mainly due to the dollar bills that there is something going on and there is far to much evidence for it to be a coincidence.
This post has allowed me to carry out my own research to establish and gain deeper understanding on the foundations behind our video, which will be important for me to help in it's production. my knowledge of the subject has now become intensely clearer and it should help with getting a real feel for our video. this post can also help the team for reference to any needed knowledge of the history of the Illuminati. Last minute plot changes could be made in reference to this post, e.g. small references to Illuminati events such as assassinations, disappearances etc.

Video introduction
In the our video there is going to be a brief introduction before the music actually starts, to break the ice and introduce the narrative of the video. I've posted some videos below to show the way in which this is done professionally:
I inserted the entire video instead of tube chopping it because this way you can see how it works and relates to the rest of the video.

Risk assesment
Holding the proagnist's eye open: in this scene one of our agents will be holding the main character's eye open, which could cause damage to the eye or the skin around it. Soloution: feedback between the two actors should prevent overdoing the scene.
Strapping the protagnist down: in this scene the main character is tied to a bed/chair and forced to watch a clip. if the actor is tied to tightly he may struggle to breathe of suffer damage to his ribs. Soloution: feedback between the actor and the people setting the scene up should prevent this by not tieing the rope to tightly.
Police attack scene: Thre is a police officer shown beating a man with a batton (on the tv screne in the hypnotize room). we will need to film this ourselves otherwise we will lose marks for someone elses footage, which means we have to have someone pretending to hit someone else with a batton. Soloution: For this we found a technique called depth of feild, which, with cetain camera angles, will allow us to make a realistic looking beating without endangering anyone.
Black cat scene: the cat is going to walk across infront of the camera, and this may require several shots and a lot of persuasion. if the cat becomes violent it could attack someone, having serious impacts.
the chase and underpass scenes: these scenes require running in the road , we will have to be extra careful here, using quiet roads and being extra vigilent by looking out for cars to ensure that noone is standing around on the road and the amount of time spent on the road is very little.

Progress
I've completed the rough storyboard, which was designed to very briefly sum up the more complex shots/ideas in the video (i.e. the start and end) and later today will begin the official polished final storyboard which will be the basis for the animatic and will include every single shot intended for the final video.
Some changes we have already made due to logistics are:
Relocating the action to a suburban environment (as getting an urban environment would be difficult baring in mind where we live and also getting one that was not going to be interupted by passers by was verging on the impossible.
Removing the woman in the red dress character, due to not being able to find someone old enough or as obviously attractive as the woman from The Matrix in order to use the whole male gaze idea.
We're currently discussing the age and apperance of the male characters, and how they should be represented, for maximum effect on the audience.
We're using the theory of binary opposition for the protaganist and the "agent" characters, presenting the agents as slick, sharply-dressed professionals, who never break their deadpan expressions, and the protaganist as scruffy, deshevelled and constantly paranoid and twitchy.

Finalised Video Concept
As discussions of the video's complex narrative concept have progressed we have decided to scale back certain ideas, and have finally come up with something semi-coherent. We decided ambiguity was key in selling the idea and making it more simplisitic in terms of everything the audience sees. To this end, I have started a rough (i.e. quickly done, without all the musical timings finalised) storyboard, detailing the images and shots required. As we have said before the peice is set in modern day, as budget obviously does not allow anything else. Also, it is a more effective peice if set in modern day, suggesting that the "dystopia" exist in society already, linking nicely back to the research I carried out on conspiracy theories (as ever, doing far too much research for a short peice, but I feel that vast knowledge of the subject matter is required, to use the images and symbology effectively, and with some authority).
Essentially we have a sequence of events that follow this rough time line:
Blank black background, white title "Uprising", with sounds of heavy breathing and panic,
Est shot- a human eye
We see that the eye is being held open by a Matrix-esque "agent" type figure, whilst another looks on.
The eye belongs to the protaganist, who is being forced to watch a telvision screen, upon which are series of images.
The agents exchange a glance.
The music then starts, and the band are shown, obscured partially by darkness, and the fact that we are only shown parts of them and their instruments in extreme close up. This is intercut with the action throughout the remainder of the video.
The Protaganist awakes, fully clothed, in a bath, presumably in his home. He evidently has no memory of how he got there.
He (very briefly) changes.
He goes downstairs in a semi-daze and turns on his television. He is watching various channels, flicking, pausing briefly. Each one seems to trigger an unpleasent reaction and he leaves the house at speed, pausing to throw on a parka.
He walks down the street and sees various people and objects that remind him of his brainwashing video, but he shakes them off.
As he walks he sees someone he recognises. It is the agent that held his eyes open earlier, who recognises him. The music pauses briefly, a close up on the protaganist's eyes as it all floods back to him.
The music kicks in again, and the agent pursues the protaganist briefly.
The protaganist bumps into a black-clad policeman in an alley and falls at him. He yells something that is not heard by the audience due to the music. The officer looks at him. Then back at the agent.
We then see a low shot of the officer grabbing the protaganist.
Cut to the band, now fully visible, performing the end of the song.
The Protaganist awakes in a bath fully clothed.
I will upload the rough storyboard when it is complete.

narrative ideas
in a recent discussion with the group we had a long talk about the basic narrative. this was a very long process of trial and improvment and explored many differet outcomes. we started with that which we already decided we liked and built on from that point. We started with the opening scene of the video, and we wanted an introduction to the video which is featured in some music videos such as when you were young by the killers etc. our introduction will consist of our protagnist being forced to watch images on a tv in a bedroom while tied to a chair or bed. in the room their would be 2 typical bad guys who are overseeing this taking place. i picture them to be representative of agent smith from the matrix. there would also be a woman in a red dress in the bedroom who would also be featured later on in the video. this woman and her later role is an intertextual reference to the matrix in general. at this stage in the video she would be less glamarous and possible be smoking when seen in the shot. one of the agents would be in some way making the protagnist's eye stay open, which would then swap to a tv showing several conspiracy related pictures and some random photos, and the word "forget". the final shot of this introduction scene would be the agents exchanging glances and then cutting to black.
the black would lead into the following scene of the protagnist layed in a bath. the music would start with the opening to this scene, and the main character would sit up gasping and possibly shaking. he will be full dressed, possible in work clothes and will be very confused and "panicy" when he wakes. he will get out of the bath, exit the house and begin walking to an unknown destination, seeing several things related to the images he was shown in the start of the video in the bedroom scene. from this point we began to debate the ending or the climax of the song. i made several suggestions, such as he sees one of the agents from the opening scene who winks at him and points toward his jacket pocket. at this point the protagnist looks in his jacket to find a weapon, probably a knife, at which point he sees a man who was in the video at the start, and starts uncontrollably running toward him with a killers intentions. when he catches the man, he pounces on him and kills him, and the dead mans wrist bears a tattoo of the illuminati logo on his wrist. the protagnist would then attempt to escape from the situation, when he is confronted by a police officer who stops him. the police officer place his in handcuffs and he also has the tattoo. At that moment, the officer who winked at him comes from round a corner, discreetley showing the officer that he also has the tatto.

video analysis the pretender
The pretender by the foo fighters is a very popular song about political unrest and people parties and governments making promises they couldn't keep, however the band stated they would like for people to have their own interpretation of the song. i think this song can relate to our own video in the idea of a conspiracy because it is about governments making fake promises to please people, and our video will include goverments doing things behind there peoples backs. other interpretations of the song could also fit with the theme of our video such as the fact the song is about someone or something pretending to be something it's not in general, and the so called Illuminati do not display their true nature to the public, or so the story goes. the video also fits in with this theme as i will show and annotate, and the video to me also shows some sort of organisation or government body trying to silence the band from their singing of the truth, which to me represents our protagonist in that his memory was removed so that he could not tell the truth of what happened, i.e. he was "silenced".
i have chosen this shot mainly for the lyrics rather than the videos reflection of their meaning. the lyrics in the section to me are all about the way in which the band or protagonist they represent has been "silenced" and put out of the way so that he cannot cause trouble or get in the way of the plans. the music is slow and sad and reflects this idea. in the beginning of the video we can see the lights switching on to reveal the band walking toward the set. Andrew Goodwin theory tells us this is illustrating what the song is telling us, and shows us that the band, which we now know represents our protagonist, are "shining a light on" the truth and illuminating total darkness. the Pitch black in the begginning shows us that the public or the viewers that the protagonist would be preaching to know absolutely nothing of the truth. We also see Dave then wrapping a bandage around his hand, which could suggest that he has been injured by the Government body that is opposing our protagonist, or it could suggest that he needs support in sending his message e.g. no one believes the protagonist because he is alone in his beliefs and lacks evidence.
This clip shows the entrance of the first police officer, or riot controller. Even though our video wont be showing the enemy directly, it will be hinting about it. the band and the officer are opposite each other showing they are both on different sides from one another, and the officer is in a black uniform, which tells us two things: it relates the person to the government, the enemy of this particular song, and the colour Also connotes that this enemy government body is black and this could suggest they are twisted or not what they seem - similar to the point about the pitch black at the start of the video, it suggests that the public know nothing of the true government at all. The video once again illustrates the lyrics: " what if i say your not like the others, what if i say your not just another one". even though this suggests that Dave is comparing him to someone else, a different part of the government or a different countries government, the point remains the same in that he is saying that the government body isn't what it seems, and the video illustrates this by introducing the opposing character, who in one shot is shown lowering his visor on his helmet. This along with his shield and uniform shows he is here to stop the commotion and stop the protagonist from spreading the truth. the lyrics also at one point say "what if i say i will never surrender"? this confirms the illustration that the protagonist is engaging the enemy in war or battle and wont stop until his message is heard by the people. Our music video will probably be less aggressive and the protagonist wont be trying to spread his truth, but it will be more about the aftermath of this story. lets say that the government body in this video succeed in silencing the protagonist, our video would be the following on of this when the protagonist goes back to normal life having been "silenced".
this clip is important because it shows the arrival of the other officers. in the last paragraph i spoke about the arrival of the first officer and how the lyrics said "what if i say your not like the others". the arrival of the others could suggest that the truthful and good governments our protagonist was comparing the original officer too have shown their true colours, and they are on the side of the original officer. before the band were outnumbering the officer, and now the band are highly outnumbered massively by the officers, which works very well in connexion to our video as some Illuminati believers insist that they actually control the world and the governments are just their puppets. The lyrics are the same as those in the last chorus, amplifying the message that they are not what they seem. The lyrics seem to now be grouping them all together, which could suggest for our video that the Illuminati are all together, and they all wear the same uniform which further pushes this idea. The lyrics previously stated that the protagonist would never surrender, and he stays true to this despite being massively outnumbered, and continues to sing. this clip in comparison with the lyrics only shows amplification and illustration, unlike the muse video which i annotated, which shown a lot of disjuncture. this gives us a wide spectrum for our video as videos of this genre show a lot of variation.
the lyrics in this clip are key to the videos meaning: Dave begins to sing "Who are you"? over and over, which is amplification. this shows a very key point to our music video, as our protagonist will be unsure of what is going on, and as we can see here the band has charged into it's enemy, finding themselves massively outnumbered and questioning who the enemy actually is. Not knowing who the enemy truly is is something i would like to put into our video, and is a massive part of the structure of the genre of conspiracy. the mystery plays a very big part to keeping the novelty and excitement of the video. when these lyrics are sung the officers all begin lowering their helmets, not giving our protagonist an answer and showing they are about to charge, which metaphorically could mean silencing them. even when the officers are beginning to prepare for the attack, the band holds their ground, showing no signs of being intimidated or prepared to surrender, which will inevitable lead to their defeat as their enemy is so powerful.
this is the final shot of the video, and shows the officers running in slow motion as the song slows down, almost like the band is preparing to fall to their enemy. When this slow part of the song ends, the big red object behind them explodes and sends red liquid shooting at the soldiers, connoting the blood that would be spilled in battle. This leads to the officers becoming blind and unable to stop the protagonist from spreading their message as the band continues to sing the same lyrics, once again showing amplification. the video illustrates the music, as the fast paced music explodes so does the big red object behind them. From my interpretation this would be representative of the public finally becoming aware of the truth of the "Illuminati" conspiracy at the last possible moment before our protagonist is silenced.
From analysing this video i have seen that we have a wide range of possibilities for our own video as far as Andrew Goodwin theory goes. this video is full of amplification, illustration and symbolism whereas plug in baby was full of disjuncture. this video has also shown me the way in which camera shots can help to keep the video in time with the song at fast paced times.

Video analysis plug in baby
Plug in baby by muse is very Representative of the alternative genre we are studying. the video has a very haunting and meaningful feel to it, which is a similar effect that we would like to capture in our video.
This shot shows strange effects, almost like a visual effect on a stereo or equalizer. this distorted effect creates a disturbed feeling and instantly opens the disturbed nature of the song up to the audience. at this point in the song, there is a strange distorted noise building in the backgorund at the same time as the picture distorting making the music seem powerful and capable.
this shot shows the band jumping around and playing a quite high end looking home, which seems mainly to be in disjuncture with the song, not illustrating it. however the song and the video are related in the way that they are both sensless and seem to be representative of nothing. when asked, Matt Belamy the lead singer and writer said that he could not actually remember what he had wrote the song about, but rather that it had been a mixture of random thoughts in his head put alongside the chords and riffs he had written in the past. this shows that the video follows the tune and the music rather than the lyrics or singing, and is therefore not entirley in disjuncture with the song.
this shot shows after the band singing and playing a woman sat in a suggestive pose, which again seems to be in disjunture with the song. the shot emplys the male gaze theory, showing off the pose in 3 different shots, one of which shows her legs in an open position. this again supports the idea of the male gaze. Her clothing is also exposing a lot of skin e.g. her legs in the fish net tights. She also relates in a shot to chocolate box theory, pulling a suggestive face, looking directly into the camera, eyes slightly closed etc. this does not seem to fit with lyrics like the other shots, and the shot of the woman.
this shot shows female limbs without exposing the rest of the shot giving a weird, eerie and distorted tint to the video. the music has become calmer at this stage of the song and less powerful. the meaning of the limbs is unclear in my opinion but suggests something being hidden, or only part of something being scene. this fits very well with our conspiracy theme music video. Also, the lyrics at this stage of the song represent this idea: "i've exposed your lies baby, the underneath is no big suprise". this to me fits very well with our idea for the video, as it suggests people already suspect something is happening but their veiw has been obscured and as a result there are many different variations of the conspiricy. this is also what will be seen in our video e.g. some people actually believe the illuminati are lizard men.
The important part of this shot is after the build up in the chorus, when the woman bends down and puts the headphones on. When she puts the headphones on, showing us that she is listening to the music, her body seems to become distorted, which once again gives us a surreal and disturbing effect on the video and the song. the strange distortion of the body is very similar to that in the picture distorting at the start of the video. this could mean that the music has the power to change people, and could be symbolic of being able to change peoples feeling and opinions by listening to it. this also has a similar feel to our video because of our conspiracy theory video, which will also show the ability of conspiricy to manipulate people.

Discussions of Concept.
At first our group dicussed music genres, and soon came to the conclusion we all liked different styles and genres, and so decided to discuss the concept of the video before we decided upon the genre or the actual song we would use.
We quickly came to the conlusion, through discussion of sci-fi-esque concepts, that as a group we were mutually interested in the conspiracy theories revoloving around things like the supposed New World Order the so-called "Illuminati" and the "faked" moon landings. We decided this would form the basis of our video, which would be largely concept-based (although with some element of performance involved, albeit somewhat enigmatically- the band in shadow, or only partially shown, or possibly obscured by science fiction paraphernalia). As the discussion developed we decided that the concept for the video fitted well within the alternative/progressive rock genres, and we selected Muse, a band renowned for their sci-fi inspired image and poiltically rebellious lyrics. The song we have chosen to use is "Uprising" from the band's 2009 album "The Resistance".
In keeping with said themes, we discussed inter-textual references, taken largely from science fiction films. and came up with the following:
A Clockwork Orange (Stanley Kubrick-1971)
In the film a clockwork orange, the protagonist, Alex, is subjected to government-issued mind control techniques (named the "Ludivoco Technique" in the film). This obviously links to the themes of our video, mind control, and dystopian science fiction. It also has inter-textual links to Alternative rock a genre known for it's connection to sci-fi imagery, and, usually, strict left-wing agendas. Many alternative rock bands, particularly Muse, dicuss goverment spin-doctoring or populous control, and A Clockwork Orange is infamous for exploring said themes, and the Ludivoco scene is an important iconic scene from the film (also any Kubrick reference is good, as he was a science fiction director often associated with conspiracy theories by internet nutters).
The Matrix (the Wachoski Brothers- 1999)
The Matrix- Glitch/ De Ja Vu
The Matrix "Red Dress":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXQozTxQSiE
This is both a thematic reference, and an incorporation of visual elements from the film. For example, one thing we discussed putting in our music video, was a "woman in the red dress" type character, used in the film to represent the Matrix deceiving the humans (if you look the once, she appears to be a woman in a red dress, look again it is an agent with a pistol). As our video revolves around concepts of paranoid confusion and Dystopian science fiction realities, and as the Matrix is a very famous and popular film revolving around these issues, with instantly recognisable symbology we feel that these references in particular will resonate with an audience. We also intend to incorporate slow motion effects, and possibly De Ja Vu references, to also hint at Matrix connotations.
I personally also intend to fit some references to comic books/graphic novels in, such as Alan Moore's Watchmen (as well as the Zac Snyder film adapatation),
and Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol as well as potentially some of the occult symbols used it Mike Mignola's Hellboy series.
